We'll show you how to use equations for your calculations
example: kinetic energy formula
This formula is used to calculate the amount of Kinetic Energy an object has
Energy is measured in joules (j), just like songs are measured in minutes (m)!
To work out the kinetic energy we need to first see what we have
For this formula (a.k.a this equation) we need to put in (plug in, enter, substitute, replace..it's all the same) some values to get the kinetic energy
So we need to know "m" which is the mass and "v" which is the velocity
plugging in the values
Remember to convert the values into Standard Units
So our value for "m" is 26g
Our value for "v" is 30 m/s
We need to just put the values for "m" and "v" into this equation, do the maths and we'll get our answer
BUT before we do that we need to make sure the units are correct
mini break
STANDARD UNITS STANDARD UNITS....
So in order for these formulas to work, you need to make sure the units for "m" and "v" are in standard units
The units for "m" are in grams currently, we need to convert this to "kg", this means 26g = 0.026kg
The units for "v" are in m/s which is standard so that's all good!
Now let's do the calculation
almost there
Do The Maths!!!
Now replace the values for "m" and "v" with your values you have in standard units
Remember that only the "v" is squared
And the answer is 11.7 joules
sooo proud of you
Well Done You
There you go! Now you know how to use equations
They're just placeholders for numbers to go into so we can calculate some important values such as energy
